Morella and Peñíscola, the two jewels of Castellón
Excursion to Morella: a trip to the Middle Ages
After a two-hour drive from Valencia, passing through the beautiful landscapes of the Levantine Coast, we will see the silhouette of a city that stands majestically, reminiscent of the Middle Ages. Here we begin our visit to Morella, an imposing walled city whose vertical construction will surprise you at first sight.
An accredited local guide will lead us through the narrow and steep cobbled streets that are characteristic of the city. The first stop will be at the famous castle that overshadows the town, an Islamic fortress from the 12th century that has witnessed many battles and historical events. Here you can learn about Morella’s influence during the time of the Crown of Aragon and how it was an important strategic point during the Reconquest.
As well as a journey through history, the castle also offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, ideal for photographers. Among its former guests, none other than the legendary Cid Campeador walked among these ramparts.
We continue our guided tour in Morella at the Convent de San Francesc, where you can admire its impressive Gothic architecture. This former Franciscan monastery stands out not only for its beauty, but also for its historical and religious importance in the region. We will also visit the Esglèsia de Santa Maria la Major, considered the most beautiful Gothic church in the Valencian Community, with an imposing façade and rich interiors that bear witness to Morella’s glorious past.
After this cultural immersion, you will have free time to explore at your own pace. Stroll through the streets, visit the local craft shops and don’t forget to try the typical cuisine found in Morella in one of the town’s cosy restaurants.
Lunch is on your own in Morella and we recommend that you book in advance, between 13:15 and 13:30, in order to enjoy the restaurants that specialise in Morella gastronomy. Some of our favourites are Casa Roque, Restaurante Vinatea, Gastro Bar Sastrería or Bocatería la Judería, among others. If you need any help with your reservations, do not hesitate to contact us.
Excursion to Peñíscola, the city in the sea
After a delicious lunch in Morella, we head east to discover Peñíscola, a city that perfectly combines history with Mediterranean charm. This coastal town is famous not only for its natural beauty, but also for its rich history, which dates back to ancient times. Film fans will recognise some of its streets and corners, as it has been chosen as a filming location for several films and television series, such as Game of Thrones.
When you visit Peñíscola, the first thing that catches your eye is the imposing castle, perched on a rocky outcrop that juts out into the blue sea. It was built by the Knights Templar and later became the residence of Pedro Martínez de Luna y Pérez de Gotor, known as el Papa Luna of “Moon Pope”, one of the most enigmatic and controversial popes in history, who used it as his palace and personal library. This is why Peñíscola is known as the city of the Papa Luna.
We continue our tour through the old town, where traces of the past can be seen at every turn. The architecture reveals layers of history, with Muslim, Roman and Templar influences woven into the fabric of the city.
Afterwards, we will go outside to visit emblematic places such as the Casa de las Conchas, famous for its façade decorated with sea shells, and the Bufador, a natural phenomenon where the sea bursts through a cave, creating an impressive spectacle.
Our walk will also take us along the old wall that protected the city, and we will enjoy the contrast between the intense colour of the sea and the blue and white tones of the picturesque houses in the old quarter, creating a postcard landscape.
After a full day exploring the wonders of Morella and Peñíscola, we will return to Valencia in the afternoon.
